When Imam ʿAlī (peace be upon him) decided to leave his house—before the light of dawn appeared—to commune with God and worship Him in the Mosque of Kufa, a goose that had been gifted to al-Hasan cried out in his face. From its cries, he (peace be upon him) sensed that a great tragedy and crushing calamity would occur. He said:
“There is no power nor strength except with God. Cries that will be followed by wailing.”
The Imam went to open the door, but it was difficult for him to open because it was made of palm trunks. He pulled it open forcefully, and his waistcloth loosened, so he tightened it while saying:
“Tighten your belt for death,
For surely death will meet you.
Do not be distressed by death
When it arrives in your valley.”
For surely death will meet you.
Do not be distressed by death
When it arrives in your valley.”
Imam al-Hasan (peace be upon him) was disturbed by his father leaving at such an early hour and said to him:
“What has made you go out at this time?”
He replied:
“I saw a dream tonight that deeply troubled me.”
Al-Hasan said:
“May it be good and lead to good. Tell it to me.”
Imam ʿAlī said:
“I saw Gabriel descending from the heavens upon Mount Abū Qubays. He took two stones from it and went with them to the Kaʿba. He struck one against the other until they turned to dust. No house in Mecca or Medina remained except that some of that dust entered it.”
Al-Hasan asked:
“What is the interpretation of this dream?”
He replied:
“If my dream is true, then your father will be killed, and there will be no house in Mecca or Medina except that grief and sorrow will enter it because of me.”
Al-Hasan was distressed and said in a low, sorrowful voice:
“When will that be?”
The Imam replied:
“God the Exalted says: ‘No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die.’ (Qur’an 31:34). But my beloved, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), told me it will be in the last ten days of Ramadan. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muljam will kill me.”
Al-Hasan said:
“If you know this, then kill him.”
Imam ʿAlī replied:
“Retaliation before the crime is not permissible, and he has not yet committed it.”
The Imam made his son al-Hasan swear to return to his bed, and al-Hasan had no choice but to comply.
Imam al-Hasan beside his wounded father
The Commander of the Faithful arrived at the Mosque of Kufa, where the great tragedy occurred at the hands of the most wretched of men. When the people of Kufa heard about it, they rushed to the mosque, and the sons of the Imam hurried there as well.
Imam al-Hasan was among the first to arrive. He found his father lying wounded in the prayer niche, his face and beard dyed with his blood, while people surrounded him trying to help him pray. When he saw his son al-Hasan, he ordered him to lead the people in prayer. The Imam prayed while sitting, as blood continued to flow from him.
After al-Hasan finished the prayer, he took his father’s head and placed it in his lap and asked:

He replied:
“ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muljam.”
Al-Hasan asked which direction he had gone. Imam ʿAlī said:
“No one should pursue him. He will soon appear from that door.”
He pointed to the door of Kinda. Shortly afterward, people brought Ibn Muljam through that very door, bound and bare-headed. They stood him before al-Hasan, who said:
“O accursed one! You killed the Commander of the Faithful and the leader of the Muslims? Is this how you repay him after he ****tered you and treated you kindly?”
Imam ʿAlī opened his eyes and said softly:
“You have done a terrible thing. Did I not treat you kindly and favor you in giving? Why do you repay me in this way?”
He then instructed his son al-Hasan to treat him kindly, saying:
“My son, be gentle with your prisoner. Show him mercy and compassion.”
Al-Hasan said:
“Father, this cursed man has killed you and caused us this calamity, yet you order us to treat him gently?”
The Imam replied:
“My son, we are a household of mercy and forgiveness. Feed him from what you eat and give him from what you drink. If I die, then retaliate by striking him once for the strike he gave me, but do not mutilate him. I heard the Messenger of God say: ‘Beware of mutilation, even if it be of a rabid dog.’ If I live, I know better what to do with him, and I am more entitled to pardon. We are a household that responds to wrongdoing with forgiveness and generosity.”
Al-Hasan looked at his father, his heart burning with grief, and said:
“Father, who will remain for us after you? Our calamity in losing you is like our loss of the Messenger of God.”
The Imam embraced him and said to calm him:
“My son, may God fill your heart with patience and increase your reward and the reward of your brothers according to the magnitude of your loss.”
The physician’s diagnosis
Al-Hasan gathered physicians to treat him. The most skilled among them was Athir ibn ʿAmr al-Sakūnī. He brought a warm sheep’s lung, inserted a vein from it into the Imam’s wound, then blew into it and removed it. It came out covered with white brain matter, indicating that the blow had reached the Imam’s brain.
Athir turned to the Imam and said sadly:

“O Commander of the Faithful, give your final instructions, for you are dying.”
Al-Hasan looked at his father with tears flowing down his face and said:
“Father, you have broken my back. How can I bear to see you in this state?”
The Imam gently said:
“My son, there will be no grief for your father after today. Today I will meet your grandfather Muhammad, your grandmother Khadijah, and your mother Fatimah. The maidens of Paradise await your father and anticipate his arrival. Do not grieve, my son, and do not weep.”
The poison spread through the Imam’s body, and his noble face turned pale. Yet he remained calm, constantly remembering God and gazing toward the heavens, praying:
“My God, I ask You for the companionship of the prophets and their successors and the highest درجات of Paradise.”
He fainted, and al-Hasan wept so much that his tears fell onto his father’s face. The Imam regained consciousness and said:
“My son, why do you cry? There is no fear or grief for your father now. Do not cry. You will be killed by poison, and your brother Husayn will be killed by the sword.”
The final will of Imam ʿAlī
The Imam then advised his sons with noble moral teachings, first addressing al-Hasan and al-Husayn and then all Muslims:
The Imam then advised his sons with noble moral teachings, first addressing al-Hasan and al-Husayn and then all Muslims:
“I advise you both to fear God. Do not seek the world even if it seeks you. Do not grieve over what you miss from it. Speak the truth and act for reward. Be enemies of the oppressor and helpers of the oppressed…”
He continued advising them about caring for orphans, maintaining family ties, respecting neighbors, holding firmly to the Qur’an, establishing prayer, maintaining the House of God, and striving in God’s path.
He then warned his relatives:
“O sons of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, do not spill the blood of Muslims saying ‘The Commander of the Faithful has been killed.’ Only my killer should be killed. If I die from this strike, strike him once in return. Do not mutilate him, for I heard the Messenger of God say: ‘Beware of mutilation, even of a rabid dog.’”
Passing away

“For the like of this let the workers work.” (Qur’an 37:61)
Then his pure soul departed to the gardens of Paradise and rose to the Highest Companion.
With his death, the pillars of justice shook, the signs of religion faded, and the helper of the weak and father of the orphans passed away.
Preparation and burial
Imam al-Hasan prepared his father’s body. He washed the pure body, perfumed it, and wrapped it in its shroud. In the final part of the night, he went out with a small group of family and companions carrying the sacred body to its resting place.
He buried him in Najaf, where his shrine now stands as a sanctuary for visitors, believers, and seekers of knowledge.
