  • The Month of Rajab al-Asabb

It is narrated from the Seal of the Prophets, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, that he said:
“Indeed, your Lord has breezes (of mercy) during the days of your lifetime—so expose yourselves to them, and do not turn away from them.”

Allah, the Exalted, has honored certain nights over others—such as Laylat al-Qadr; certain days over others—such as Friday; and certain months over others—such as the three luminous months that begin with the month of Rajab, which Allah has magnified and honored. It is described as al-Asabb because mercy is poured abundantly in it. In a hadith it is reported that when the month of Rajab arrived, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, would gather the Muslims around him and address them, saying:
“O Muslims, a great and blessed month has overshadowed you. It is the month of al-Asabb, in which mercy is poured upon the worshipper—except for a polytheist or one who openly promotes innovation in Islam.”
    • It is one of the Sacred Months that Allah, the Exalted, has magnified.
    • It is a month honored by noble occasions: within it occurred the mission (bi‘tha) of the Seal of the Prophets, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, on the twenty-seventh; and on the thirteenth, the Sacred Ka‘bah was honored with the birth of the Master of the Trustees, peace be upon him. Thus, the Ahl al-Bayt, peace be upon them, called it the month of the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him.
    • It is reported from the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, that he said:
“Rajab is my month, Sha‘ban is the month of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and Ramadan is the month of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.”
    • It is a season of supplication. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said:
“Indeed Allah, the Exalted, has appointed in the seventh heaven an angel called the Caller. When the month of Rajab begins, that angel calls out every night until morning: ‘Blessed are those who remember (Allah); blessed are the obedient.’ Allah, the Exalted, says: ‘I am the companion of whoever sits with Me, the obedient of whoever obeys Me, and the Forgiver of whoever seeks My forgiveness. The month is My month, the servant is My servant, and mercy is My mercy. Whoever calls upon Me in this month, I answer him; whoever asks of Me, I give him; whoever seeks My guidance, I guide him. I have made this month a rope between Me and My servants—whoever holds fast to it reaches Me.’”
    • It is a month in which Allah loves fasting. His Noble Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, informed us of the virtue of fasting in it, saying:
“Indeed, Rajab is the month of Allah, al-Asabb; no month comes close to it in sanctity and virtue with Allah… Whoever fasts one day of Rajab with faith and seeking reward earns the greatest pleasure of Allah; his fasting on that day extinguishes the anger of Allah and closes against him a gate of the Fire. Even if he were given the fill of the earth in gold, it would not be better than his fasting.”
    • It is a month in which Allah loves prostration, and that His remembrance in prostration be made throughout the month:
“Great is the sin of Your servant, so let Your pardon be beautiful,”
following the example of Imam Zayn al-‘Abidin, peace be upon him.
    • May Allah, the Exalted, include us among those who expose themselves to the breezes of Rajab and benefit from them.

And our final supplication is: all praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
