What is the Day of Ghadir?
The Day of Ghadir is the eighteenth day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah in the tenth year after the blessed Prophetic Hijrah.
According to Shi'a belief, it is the day on which the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), by the command of Allah, appointed Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) as his successor, trustee, Imam, and guardian after him.
It is considered a great and significant day, and numerous traditions describe its virtues and importance. In a narration from Imam Ali ibn Musa al-Ridha (peace be upon him), reported from his father and grandfather, it is stated:
“Indeed, the Day of Ghadir is more renowned in the heavens than it is on the earth.”
Imam Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) is also reported to have said:
“Its name in heaven is the Day of the Covenanted Pledge, and on earth it is the Day of the Taken Covenant and the Witnessed Gathering.”
Imam al-Ridha (peace be upon him) further said:
“By Allah, if people truly knew the virtue of this day, the angels would shake hands with them ten times every day.”
It is regarded as the second most important event in Islam after the Prophet’s mission and the revelation of the Holy Qur’an.
Eid al-Ghadir
The Day of Ghadir is celebrated as a festival and is considered one of the greatest and most noble Islamic celebrations. It is referred to as “The Greatest Festival of Allah” and is regarded as the day on which the religion was perfected and divine blessings were completed.
A narration from Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (peace be upon him), from his forefathers, reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
“The Day of Ghadir Khumm is the greatest of the festivals of my community. It is the day on which Allah, Exalted is He, commanded me to appoint my brother Ali ibn Abi Talib as a guiding leader for my nation after me. It is the day on which Allah perfected the religion, completed His blessing upon my community, and approved Islam as their religion.”
Why Is It Called “Ghadir”?
The day is named after Ghadir Khumm, the location where the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), by Allah’s command, gathered with tens of thousands of his companions on his return from the Farewell Pilgrimage. Ghadir Khumm was a place situated between Mecca and Medina. Since the event occurred there, the day became known by the name of that location.
